love isn't all
that it seems i did you wrong
that last thing on the she-cats' mind that morning when she woke up was wandering around riverclan territory alone. didn't most apprentices do it once or twice in their life? sure. but maplepaw wasn't most apprentices. she hadn't even set foot outside of the camp when she was a kit, and the only time she had left the camp was today. she'd been an apprentice for a couple of days, and while she had been doing duties around the camp and enjoying herself immensely, she had heard things. whether or not these things were true was up to debate, but what the apprentice had said it to her last night while they ate their evening meal, well she couldn't sleep all night.
that's why she had snuck out just behind the morning border patrol; kept her head down, didn't make a noise (something she was quite good at), and away they went with a rogue apprentice in tow. she broke away from them, though her courage waned the farther and farther they ventured from camp, until she was certain she was going to experience her very first border patrol, less a mentor.
she hadn't realized before just how wet riverclan was, and how it seemed almost comical to her that she was born to a clan of swimmers with ridiculously long fur. she had no idea how her mother had managed for all those moons. her sis- she stopped dead in her tracks, and took a deep breath in. she couldn't think about her right now. she'd lose what little nerve she had left and go crying back to loonfrost about how much of a horrible apprentice she was turning out to be. no, that wasn't going to happen. with that thought in mind, she sucked in a great deal of air, puffed out her chest and bounded off for the crazy two-leg thing the apprentice had told her about last night.
unfortunately for the young apprentice, she hadn't factored in that she had no idea what lay within, or outside of riverclan territory. she had reasoned with herself that she would be able to distinguish the scents, but now she wasn't so sure. maplepaw had been moving for awhile, and there was no sign of anything that looked like something from two-legs. but now that she thought of it, she didn't even really know what a two-leg was.
"oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no." her tiny voice stumbled over itself as she turned in circles, sloshing the water that danced around her ankles. her eyes were frantic, trying to determine which direction the camp was in. everything was alien to her untrained eye, and to make matters worse, no one even knew where she was. she could be found by a rogue, or a giant water snake, or one of those big creatures the elders were talking about that could swallow a cat whole! the sound of movement froze her mid circle, and she began to whimper as she sank down upon herself, even when the cool water caressed the soft flesh of her belly. "oh please starclan, don't let me die."
