take me higher

it was a relief really, that the pretty brown tabby she-warrior wsa able to understand why he did what he did. there were so few in the clan that took the time to, or cared to, understand why certain members tried to do things differently. it was rewfreshing, and though he didn't respond verbally, he nodded at her and smiled a little in recognition. him wanting to hunt alone was either met with understanding or with scorn. apparently, hunting alone didn't really make him a team player. whatever that meant.
"yeah, I guess you're right." he responded with a shrug and a slight sigh. he so rarely found himself needing the assistance of sparrowpelt that he forgot about the medicine cat altogether. however, the scars on his face would forever be a reminder as to why they were needed. without her, smokeheart was certain that hawkstrike would've sent him straight to starclan. "things would probably go smoother for her if she got herself an apprentice. she's been on her own for a while now." the tom was taken aback by his own words. for someone who didn't think about the small tabby she-cat, he sure knew a lot about what went on around her. his brow furrowed slightly, and he concluded that when you live in close quarters with someone, not a lot is kept secret. the thought made him horribly uncomfortable.
the two warriors walked in silence for several moments, smokeheart acutely aware of the way the she-cat moved next to him. in the splashes of sun that snuck through the dense mass of pine trees, her pelt almost appeared golden, and it made his stomach flutter. there was something about this she-cat and he couldn't figure out what it was. she seemed so eager to be here with him, yet at the same time, withdrawn. he was certain it wasn't anything he said, he had already apologized for the slip of the tongue earlier. maybe it was that she actually didn't want to be around him and she was just trying to be nice to him, but now she was stuck hanging around with him for longer than she intended. smokeheart stopped dead in his tracks and looked into her green eyes with his orange ones. he opened his mouth, but no words came out right away.
"if you don't want to hunt with me, and get water, that's fine. i'll understand. just stop moping around. you make me feel like I did something wrong." the words tumbled from his mouth, more frustrated with the entire thing that anything else. he hadn't meant to say it quite as bluntly as that, but it was done now. he was tempted to apologize, his mouth opening slightly, and then snapping shut again. no, smokeheart had done enough apologizing already today. "but if you do want to join me to get water and then hunt some more, I would like that very much." his tone hadn't changed much, but he did manage to look a little less angry.
