Every step felt weighed down by a thousand bricks. In his wildest dreams (which were quite grayscale in retrospect) he never imagined himself ascending to the position of leader, for Hazelstar was alive and well with nine lives nearly immortalizing her, and he suspected he’d pass and watch from the stars as a new deputy was appointed long before his time to lead ever came. It was a simple truth that he accepted in spite of his initial begrudging, but it was his acceptance that prevented him from overcoming the shock that had settled in ever since Hazelstar returned her lives and announced that she wanted to dedicate her one life to finding her lost child. On a small, almost nonexistent level he could understand what she did. There had been a point in time where he nearly cherished family above all else, even his Clan, but that point in time was long gone. He couldn’t fathom what he’d do if Wolfstep’s disappearance was unexplained and didn’t involve a pathetic kittypet. There was a chance his outlook on Hazelstar’s situation would be a little different, a little more sympathetic even, so if anything it was Wolfstep’s fault that he couldn’t look at his former leader the same way he had before she’d chosen to leave. For a moment, he wondered what it’d be like to have his brother at his side to see him into a role of leadership, but he dismissed the thought quickly and bitterly. He didn’t want his brother at his side. He didn’t want anything from his brother. Frankly, it was news to him that he still had one to begin with.
Oakclaw didn’t realize that his ears had flattened against the top of his head, and that his tail had started to slash behind his legs angrily. He recomposed his body language, and then shot a sideways glance at RiverClan’s medicine cat, Nettleheart, who walked beside him in easy silence. No matter what, he wasn’t going to let Wolfstep ruin this moment for him. He was going to be good to his Clan, and he was going to be good at what he did. Hazelstar had been an admirable leader, and even though he didn’t always agree with the decisions she made (especially in regards to cross-Clan romances) he’d known that his own respect for her ran deep and untainted—it was a shame, really, that she decided to leave when she did, because now he could associate her with little more than lingering hostility. It wasn’t her fault that his brother ruined it for him, and he supposed that if she succeeded in her mission, she’d be welcomed back into the Clan. After all, there was a difference between wanting to leave and having to leave, and Oakclaw was only just able to make it out.
The mouth of the cave was within sight, and with renewed attention, Oakclaw inclined his head proudly. “Thank you for escorting me, Nettleheart.” It was the first words he’d spoken since the two of them left camp, but it was clear from the seriousness in his eyes as he held the medicine cat’s gaze that he meant it in full. He was unsurprised to find that the dark, mysterious recesses of the cave didn’t intimidate him. While it was true that the promise of leadership had seemed entirely out of his reach, he still thought about it from time to time, and he felt oddly at peace with the transition he was about to make. There was no fear in taking the reins of RiverClan, for in a way he felt entitled to them, and he anticipated great things for their future. He was eager to begin, but he remained where he was in the chance Nettleheart wished to speak with him beforehand. The medicine cat’s thoughts on Hazelstar stepping down, and him replacing her, remained unknown, but Oakclaw wasn’t keen to pique his brain. Any concerns, after all, would’ve been brought to his attention a long time ago—or so he hoped. He didn’t need to be reassured by anyone that he was a good fit for the position.

Notes: I couldn't wait. xD I was so excited and the muse came out of nowhere. It's okay if this thread gets held up by my trip. I figure it'll take a bit for people to figure out their lives/StarClan characters anyways.
