dreams. the calico she-cat had never really thought about the concept before. she knew that sometimes sleep brought nightmares, visits from a gnarled and grotesque version of her sister, begging maplepaw to save her from the sickness. very rarely did sleep bring about something pleasant, something that didn't cause her to wake up feeling as if her world was imploding. maplepaw was never the one to run around in her dreams, through fields of wild flowers, and the sun shining warmly upon her frame. it was an anomaly that that night she did not greet her sister with fear, but with joy. no more was there gaping holes of rotten flesh strewn throughout her pale tabby pelt; she was whole, bright and full of life. for a moment, a heart beat, maplepaw believed that lilykit was of riverclan, not starclan.
but, like all good dreams, she had to wake up. it was almost cruel, the slow realization that her sister wasn't pressed against her side. painfully aware of lilykit's absence, maplepaw took a deep breath, and unrolled herself, stretching out her limbs. blinking slowly, she took in the mismatch of pelts that made up the apprentices, calculating who had gone on the morning patrol, and who were granted the option of rest. maplepaw had been among the latter, and though most of the time, she would've curled back up with her nose tucked under her paw, this morning, the last thing she wanted to do was go back to sleep. instead, she pushed her lithe body from her nest and maneuvered her way carefully out of the den.
despite the promise of leaf-fall hung over the clans, the morning air was more refreshing than rude. it cleared her head, almost erased the hollow feeling resting deep in her chest; a feeling that would never really go away. it wasn't the fact that her sister was dead, and never going to come back. or, maybe it was. whatever it was from, maplepaw felt ashamed. she was the sister that was healthy, she was the one that survived, and she couldn't even make it through the morning without moping around about her dead sister. flicking her tail, maplepaw attempted to shake that particular thought from her mind, and as a warrior passed her, she offered a smile, before quickly looking away. every cat in the clan had experienced loss, so why was she the only one crippled by it?
