personality
mousewhisker is truly a cat who came out of her shell. where once, she was shy and nervous, now she is a fierce, bold and self-assured feline. her heart and loyalty lies solely with windclan and it's cats. though she has often felt out of place, her loyalty has never wavered. her thoughts aren't ever far from how she can help lead her clan to success. mousewhisker is always looking to exploit weaknesses and use any tactic to pull windclan ahead. she has no time for romance and even less for kits. her only interest in kits is if they will make good apprentices, and eventually good warriors.
when mousewhisker was a kit she was a timid, easily frightened creature. she believed that every day, her family risked dying and she was going to grow up alone. as a single kit, she was coddled by her mother and doted on by her father. it made her selfish and naive. it took her well into her apprenticeship to shake the lessons she learned a young kit. even now, at her current age, she is often seen as selfish, though she has devoted her whole life to her clan. she would gladly give everything for windclan, she has been seen as greedy for more territory and glory.
she dislikes young kits, but those that are almost apprentice aged are welcome to be around her. as long as they listen to her lessons. mousewhisker is a demanding teacher and expects respect from all those younger than her. she believes she has earned every ounce of respect from young cats. as a mentor, she is patient, but exacting - failure isn't an option and her apprentices are worked until exhaustion. if they aren't out training for fighting or hunting, they are patrolling or cleaning out the dens. she has no problem punishing her apprentices by confining them to camp if they can't keep up with her training. she feels that any warrior that can't handle her training is not worthy of the title. her apprentices are expected to recite the warrior code at the start of every day, to ingrain the code into their hearts.
when it comes to breaking the warrior code, mousewhisker believes there is no excuse. any cat caught should be exiled and even those that protest. if she had it her way, all half-clan kits would be exiled from the clan as well. she doesn't believe that a half-clan cat can truly be loyal to their clan. she has no sympathy for those that claim they have no choice in who they can love. mousewhisker has no tolerance for any that break the code and will never accept them as warriors if she finds out someone has stepped outside the code. she has no issue rationalizing breaking the code when it's against an already code breaker or an outsider.

history
when rosefur and badgerfang met, they didn't quite feel attraction, they both had grown up together. but their relationship was more out of desire to have kits and have a loyal mate. though there was no love, there was plenty of happiness and respect. badgerfang made sure to take care of rosefur when she became pregnant, bringing her the best fresh kill and grooming hard to reach places. they had a litter of three, only one survived.
mousekit was very nervous, often told to be careful, her mother was overly cautious after the death of her two littermates. though one had been stillborn, the other had died within a few days with no explanation. rosefur often told mousekit that if she stayed in the den, she would be safe. so even when other kits were out playing outside the nursery, mousekit stayed inside, too scared to even think about sneaking out. her father, badgerfang would visit her and her mother often.
he would regale them with tales of the dangers of the outside world. how a fox had attacked a patrol and a cat was in the medicine cats den, how some cat had been hit by a monster on the thunderpath. all these stories did was cement her mother's worries and rosefur worked even harder to shelter her child. mousekit was excluded from playing with the other kits, as they thought she was much too childish and weird. elders and older warriors began to whisper and talk about badgerfang and rosefur's parenting style as the moons went out.
mousekit didn't leave the nursery until the day of her apprentice ceremony, at six moons, she was far behind her peers. she was apprenticed with another litter that was only a few days younger than herself. but the younger litter, fernkit and grasskit, were confident and well prepared for training, compared to her twitching nervous self. when she was called forward, she tripped and fell right on her nose, and began to cry. after embarrassing herself, her mentor, a senior warrior named gorsetail, was quite disappointed in his newest apprentice.
he was a harsh mentor and even though it was clear that mousepaw had trouble keeping up, due to her lack of exercise as a kit. he didn't slow down for her. he made her fight other apprentices and she often lost, though she succeeded at hunting. it took her five moons, before she was finally starting to catch up to those that had been apprenticed the same day. even so, she was behind.
when she was thirteen moons, she watched as the younger kits were made into warriors, fernheart and grasshawk. her envy hardened her heart and she threw herself back into training, training harder than she ever had. she began to avoid rosefur and badgerfang, growing angry at how stunted that had made her. mousepaw was fifteen moons when bad news came again, badgerfang was dead, killed by his own namesake, a badger. though she had never forgiven her parents, she still mourned his loss, staying vigil next to her mother. they reconciled a small bit. she no longer avoided her mother after that day.
she became warrior at sixteen moons, after having watched many younger cats become warriors first, she was deeply humbled and ashamed. but it only drove mousewhisker to become a better warrior than all of them. she worked tirelessly, asking to go on every patrol, hunting at every chance. she even continued to clean out the elders dens and nursery. she wanted to prove herself to her clan. prove that she was a worthy and good warrior. when she was twenty-four moons, she got her first apprentice - skypaw.
skypaw was a boisterous, rowdy kit and mousewhisker quickly whipped the apprentice into shape. she worked skypaw as hard as she worked herself, finding it earned dislike from skypaw's family. but she didn't care, she wanted the apprentice to be as worthy a warrior as she was. during this time, grasshawk began to spend more time with mousewhisker and he soon earned her trust and respect. she wanted to finish skypaw's training before they had kits and he agreed, training his own apprentice.
when skypaw became a warrior, skypelt, mousewhisker and grasshawk renewed their new relationship. it didn't take long and mousewhisker was in the nursery again, it caused her stress to be in here again. but she knew she would never be a parent like badgerfang or rosefur. nor would she allow grasshawk to be like them. mousewhisker was thirty-five moons when they had two kits, burdockkit and foxkit. grasshawk grew distant almost immediately after their birth, though it disappointed mousewhisker, she did her best to raise their daughter and son.
she taught them to be curious and learn the warrior code, and every once and awhile, grasshawk would remember them and visit. after six moons, they were apprenticed to a couple of experienced warriors, harespring and junipercloud. mousewhisker threw herself into her warrior duties again, as if she hadn't missed a beat. she still considered grasshawk her mate, however, and when he began to avoid her in earnest, mousewhisker followed him. he left the camp at night and she found him meeting a shadowclan she-cat. her heart was broken, but she stayed and watched.
she heard the she-cat whisper something about kits and her blood curdled. when the shadowclan cat was gone, mousewhisker confronted grasshawk. he didn't deny it and begged her to hold this secret for him. she refused and as a monster rushed past, she pushed him into the thunderpath. mousewhisker left him there to be found by a patrol. she kept his secret alright, but she refused to have her kits and herself suffer the humiliation that he had almost forced upon them. when the patrol broke his body back, she mourned with her kits and held a vigil for him.
she was never suspected for his death, and she was given another apprentice at fifty moons, a tom named rabbitpaw. she kept a healthy interest in her kits' lives and worked hard training rabbitpaw and making sure he maintained his lessons. her kits became warriors, burdockroot and foxfang. shortly after their ceremony, burdockroot went missing. mousewhisker grieved her loss, but remained close to her son. her mother, rosefur retired to the elders den and mousewhisker was even more fierce in making sure that the apprentices all kept the dens cleaned and the elders clean too. rabbitpaw became a warrior after seven moons, and at her current age of sixty-two moons, she hasn't had another apprentice yet.
