"up and at it, ecplipsepw, it's time to refine your tracking skills." the sun was just barely beginning to breach the horizon, dawn patrols would be heading out within the heart beat, and the day would grow anew. moon high's frost would not thaw for some time yet, but that did not stop the ebony deputy from stirring his apprentice from her warm solace.
onyxfeather had felt strange in acornflight's absence, when she carried onto the life of a warrior and he no longer had the need for training on top of his duties. there was an emptiness in her place, however it wasn't something the tom had to deal with for too long.
then eclipsepaw came along. she was a marvellous creature, full of confidence and glory. their leader knew exactly what they was doing when they assigned the determined young she-cat to onyxfeather's care. he had to admit, he didn't frequent the nursery often, so he wasn't exactly sure what he was getting into at first. what he did know was that ecplisekit, now ecplisepaw, had a personality that took warming up too. onyxfeather was still trying to figure that bit out - they didn't exactly see eye to eye. at times he wished he was not bound by moral obligations, such that he could put the she-cat in her place on his terms. yet we can't all have our way.
the ebony tom loomed at the mouth of the apprentice den. he did not attempt to traverse the sleeping bodies to stir eclipsepaw. the other sleeping bodies would pay no mind, and if they did, well, onyxfeather didn't dream they'd become cross with him. their mentors would likely be by soon, too. "i hope you're not too hungry this morning, i'd like us to have an early start." and with that, the deputy bowed out of the entrance and into the heart of camp. eclipsepaw would either follow or she wouldn't, and so the first test had officially been laid out.
